If, like me, you have a fire in your belly for justice and a desire to love others well, let me point you in the direction of a few of my favourite organisations that are doing this well.
Shining Light Ministries:
“Remember those who are in prison as though you were together with them.”
–Hebrews 13:3
Shining Light take two week performing arts workshops into state prisons and jail facilities across the United States to help expand perspective and inspire life change in prison and beyond. Over the last 20 years, they have been in and out of 60 different correctional facilities. On purpose.
There is something extremely humbling and powerful about seeing God bring freedom and transformation to those currently living behind bars, and there isn’t another organisation quite like this one in America. If you would love to be a part of seeing humanity restored to those who have had it lost or stolen from them, then I couldn’t encourage you enough to get involved with this amazing team. His light really does shine in the darkest of places, and the darkness never overcomes it!
Treasures:
Treasures is a unique, faith-based outreach and support group for women in the sex industry.
Their mission is to reach, restore, and equip women in the sex industry and victims of sex trafficking to live healthy, flourishing lives, and train others to do the same across the globe.
Treasures now operates out of both LA and NYC as well as training other teams around the world to do similar outreaches in their cities. If you have a heart for women in the sex industry, I would love to invite you to partner with this wonderful organisation!
Liberty Church:
I honestly don’t know where I’d be without each of the church communities that I have found home in over the years and around the world. Maybe you’re in need of one right now too!
Liberty Church is currently made up of eight different communities: five in NYC, one in St. Petersburg, Florida, one in San Francisco, California, another in Manzini, Swaziland and a ninth to be launched later this year in London, England. Pioneered and lead by Paul and Andi Andrew, we desire to follow Christ together, thrive in community and make a difference wherever we go. You’ll find Phillip and myself at our Upper West Side, Manhattan service every Sunday if you should ever like to join us.
Justice Rising:
Justice Rising builds peace in war-affected communities by providing quality education to children at risk. They build schools, train teacher leaders, and develop community programs towards the goal of promoting peace and mitigating future conflict.
As an organisation, Justice Rising believes that education is the most powerful tool to build peace and to break the cycle of war. Every child, regardless of circumstance, should have access to a quality education.
